While Decatur may be a small town, this city has gained a reputation as a dining destination, and has many big-city residents traveling there to sample its restaurants' offerings.

That's no surprise: In 2012, Southern Living named Decatur one of the Top Tastiest Towns in the South. Cakes & Ale, which serves dinner and Sunday Supper in its restaurant and breakfast, lunch, dessert and coffee in its cafe, has been recognized by Bon Appetit magazine and The New York Times. Cakes & Ale's founder, Chef Billy Allin, is a 2011 southeaster semi-finalist for the James Beard Foundation Award.

Diners are taking notice of the city's other restaurants too. Selections run the gamut: From bakeries to pubs to American to Mexican to Thai, you'll find no shortage of menu choices. For breakfast and brunch alone, you have several options. Try Pastries A Go Go on Ponce de Leon Avenue for baked goods, omelets and other breakfast items. Pastries A Go Go also serves lunch, and you can build your sandwich with an number of fresh ingredients. Prices range from $1.25 to about $8.

Sweet Melissa's on the Downtown Square has been open since 1989. This family restaurant serves breakfast and lunch and also offers catering services. Menu specialties include omelets (create your own), breakfast platters and pancakes for breakfast (the yogurt pancakes are famous). Lunch selections include burgers, sandwiches, wraps, tacos and salads. Prices range from about $2 to $9.

For more exotic fare, the Iberian Pig gets rave reviews. Located on Sycamore Street, this restaurant's specialties include cured and aged Spanish meats (with a focus on pork), aged cheeses, salads with a unique blends of greens and other ingredients, and tapas dishes with a Mediterranean flair. Iberian Pig is open for dinner seven nights a week. Prices range from about $5 for appetizers to $38 for a meat sampler plate.

If you enjoy watching your chef in action, No. 246 offers Chef's Counter packages, which allow four diners to have a front-row seat as Chef Drew Belline creates an impromptu five-course meal. Cost is $50 per person. This restaurant is located on Ponce de Leon Avenue and also serves up a traditional dining experience, for lunch, brunch or dinner. Menu offerings include a number of pasta dishes, salads and pizzas. Prices start at around $5 for lunch appetizers and go up to $28 for steak entrees.

You'll find a more casual atmosphere, and the food to go with it, at Leon's Full Service on Ponce de Leon. Leon's is a gastro pub serving snacks, pub frites, salads and sandwiches, as well as full entrees such as grilled chicken, pan-seared trout and a veggie loaf of roasted cauliflower, shiitake mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes. Gluten-free options are also available. Leon's serves lunch Tuesday through Sunday, and dinner seven nights a week. Prices range from $5 to $23.
