When it opened in 1954, the Fontainebleau was the largest and most luxurious hotel in South Florida.

Valet

In 2008, the resort completed a $1 billion renovation and expansion. The resort's 1,504 guest rooms include 846 rooms and suites in the original buildings. The 37-story Tresor and 18-story Sorrento, two new luxury all-suite towers located at the south end of the property, have 658 junior, one- and two-bedroom suites.

Lobby

Morris Lapidus, the hotel's architect, included signature features like a 17,000-square-foot lobby with a now legendary staircase to nowhere, six acres of formal gardens designed to replicate Versailles, and antique furnishings to authentically convey the hotel's French period theme.

Bow Ties in the Lobby

The white marble floor of the lobby is dotted with black marble bow ties – Lapidus' personal signature. The hotel's pool is also shaped like a bow tie.

Morris Lapidus-Inspired Bow Ties

Bow tie-shaped brownies are sold at Solo, the resort's coffee and pastry shop.

Staircase to Nowhere

Through the 1950s and '60s, the resort reigned as Miami's place to see and be seen. Celebrities and entertainers like Elvis Presley, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball and Judy Garland made the hotel so popular, that the hotel posted armed guards to bar non-guests from entering.
