Inside Greystone Mansion

You don’t have to travel to a grand manor house in England or a glitzy mansion in New York to get an up-close-and-personal taste of glamorous, 1920s intrigue and scandal. L.A.’s own storied mansion, known as Greystone, opens its doors to the public for a few months every summer for a room-to-room production of The Manor — Murder and Madness at Greystone Mansion, a play inspired by the lavish estate’s dark past.

Historical Exterior

This is what the remarkable property looked like back in the 1920s, when the first act of The Manor takes place. The play follows iconic Los Angeles developer Ned Doheny, his wife Lucy and their five children when they moved into the newly built estate. Four months later, Ned and his secretary, Hugh Plunket, were found dead in a bedroom with a smoking gun between them. No one has been able to figure out the murder/suicide details to this day.

Exterior Today

Greystone Mansion, where an unsolved murder took place in the late 1920s, was more recently the site of truly extraordinary design house merging some of L.A.'s greatest designers with inspirational titans.

Historical Living Room

Here's a shot of the living room back in the day with original period furnishings. Those who use it today, either for events or filming, bring in their own designers and furnishings, but this photo provides great inspiration.

Gardens and Stairway

Owned and operated by the City of Beverly Hills, Greystone has myriad areas, both inside and out, where events can be held and film, commercial or television shooting can take place, sometimes simultaneously.

Fountain and Gardens

This area in the back of Greystone could pass for Italy, France, Spain, England ... even Beverly Hills? Filmmakers find the place a one-stop shop for locations.

Bowling Alley

You might recognize Greystone's two-lane, private bowling alley from a very important scene in the film There Will Be Blood. The mansion has also been featured in films like All of Me, Batman & Robin, The Big Lebowski and X-Men, and TV shows including Dark ShadowsDynastyMurder She Wrote and Gilmore Girls.
