Make an Upcycled Pie Pan Tiered Stand

Use old pie and cake pans to make a one-of-a-kind serving stand.

Tiered serving platters make an excellend display for seasonal fruits and appetizers. Making your own tiered serving platter is a cinch with thrift store finds. The next time you are checking out garage sales or rummage sales, grab a few pie or cake pans for this easy DIY.

Materials

  • old pie or can pans, assorted sizes
  • turned leg or spare piece of wood
  • craft glue (E6000)
  • chalk paint and polyurethane (optional)

You will need three pie/cake pans for this project (three different sizes if you can) and a turned wood scrap from an old chair or rail.  You can use a 1 and 1/2 inch dowel too. You will also need to use a strong craft glue, like E6000. This type of glue has exceptional adhesion to wood, metal, glass, fiberglass, ceramics and concrete.

Paint the outside of the pans. This is optional. The cake/pie pans we used were different finishes, so to make them uniform we painted the outside of the pans to make them match. Do not paint the inside of the pans with the chalk paint-it is not food safe. Use a polyurethane spray to seal in the paint on the outside of the pan when finished.

Cut the dowel/wood piece into two pieces. Ours was cut at three and a half inches and four and a half inches. Make sure you have nice flat ends. Paint two coats of chalk paint on each piece.

Once all of the paint is dry, it's time to assemble. Place a generous amount of E6000 glue on one end of the dowel and place in the center of the large pie/cake pan. Do the same with the second dowel in the middle of the the second (middle size) cake pan.  The glue doesn't set immediately, so you will need to let it sit for at least 30 minutes.

Once the glue has set, add the smaller pie/cake pan on top of the middle pan. Let it set for 30 minutes.

Then, add the middle and top piece to the bottom pie/cake pan. Let the glue cure for 24 hours.

Add fruit, cookies, crackers, etc. to your tiered serving platter. To clean, wipe down the inside with a damp towel.
