Much like fashionable London, the Atlanta skyline is looking a little more posh these days with the addition of a Ferris wheel – and scary, that is, if you’re afraid of heights. Similar to the London Eye located on the River Thames, the SkyView Atlanta is a 20-story wheel located next door to the Tabernacle, a popular music venue and across the street from Centennial Olympic Park. It makes its debut later this month.

The wheel was originally located in Paris next door to the Louvre and was then moved to Pensacola, Fla. When private investors wanted to roll it up to Atlanta, the decision to allow the relocation was a no-brainer for Atlanta City Council members, as it did not require any public funding.

"I think it's a winner for us," said City Councilman Kwanza Hall. "It's something we're not spending city money on. We're not using city property. These are private developers who are making an investment in this part of town."

While it is substantially shorter than the 450-foot-high London Eye, it is slightly taller than the 150-foot Ferris wheel at Chicago's Navy Pier. SkyView is also outfitted with 42 air-conditioned gondolas capable of seating six riders in each. Tickets range from $12 – 14 and according to the website, “VIP” gondolas are available.

The world’s largest Ferris wheel, the Singapore Flyer, measures in at 541 feet; however, the Dubai Eye and the New York Wheel, both in construction, are in a race to top that.
