Hop on the scenic Rickenbacker Causeway from downtown Miami and you'll find yourself on a seven-mile journey through Biscayne Bay out to the secluded island of Key Biscayne.

The causeway turns into Crandon Park Boulevard after you cross through Virginia Key, where you'll notice a marina, golf course, several public beach entrances and the Crandon Park Tennis Center, home to the Sony Open tournament every spring.

Once you pass through Crandon Park, the main drag through the village is flanked by local businesses, restaurants and boutiques. Home to only about 12,000 residents, the island exudes a tropical charm and laid-back vibe.

Lush landscaping and tropical foliage lines Crandon Boulevard, and as you head to the island's end, you'll run into Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation Area, where the beach invites swimming, fishing and kayaking, and the historic Cape Florida lighthouse is open for tours.

It's no wonder the residents of Key Biscayne want to keep their island paradise a secret. The palm tree-lined streets, breezy island temperatures and secluded neighborhoods make the village a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of Miami.
