Most of what the nation knows about Baltimore they’ve learned from watching The Wire and Homicide: Life on the Streets. While there is some truth to this gritty fiction, there is more to Baltimore. Maryland’s largest city is home to diverse ethnic groups, and it’s quirky enough to have a pro football team named after an avian character from a 19th-century poem. While Baltimore may be the city that industry built -- the city was once home to the largest steel mill in the world -- now it is a hub for technology and health care with Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University as the city’s largest employers.
